Virtual Reality on a tablet?

Does Virtual Reality work on a tablet?

Not ideally, no. But as this picture shows, you can get the two images required on a small tablet. At least on this is Samsung Tab A 8.0. Combine this with a foldable VR headset, like the VR Square Mini we use, and you’re there!

Is this something you should want? You have a smartphone as well right?

Most smartphones will definitely give you a more comfortable experience. And one that always works. However, we think this DIY solution is interesting for two reasons:

  1. We work a lot with schools. Schools often already have tablets, while many of them forbid smartphones. This could be a cheap work-around for experimentation.
  2. We will use this setup as a backup for our lessons with CoSpaces Edu. Here, the focus lies on creating and coding; students only sometimes play their games in VR. But the smartphone app of CoSpaces Edu does not support coding. So we bring a few tablets along, for when schools have too few devices available. This way, students can also play their creations in VR!

VR Best Buying Guide

Want to know more about what VR hardware to buy? We often advice schools and companies on this. It turns out however to be harder problem than it seems: your choice should very much depend on what you want to do with your hardware. Some general advice:

  • Don’t spend all of your money at once, VR hardware tends to develop very fast
  • Realize that choosing a VR headset usually also means choosing an ecosystem
  • Focus on the content: what do you want to do with the hardware?
